On January 8, 1313 King called him Edward II. By Writ of Summons in the Parliament called and gave him so the hereditary peerage Baron Cobham (of Kent). During the Despenser War from 1321 he loyally supported King Edward II. In 1322 he led the legal proceedings in Canterbury against Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere, who was accused of high treason . Eventually he was made governor of Tonbridge Castle in 1324 .
Before July 1285 he had married Maud de Morville, widow of Metthew de Columbers. He died in Hache on August 25, 1339 at the age of 79 and was buried in Beauchamp Chapel in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset .
