John "Johnnie" Tolan (born October 22, 1917 in Victor , Colorado , † June 6, 1986 in Redondo Beach , California ) was an American racing driver .

Career

Tolan was one of the most successful midget pilots after World War II . In 1946 he won 46 races in one season and won the Rocky Mountain Midge Championship. In 1947 he repeated the championship success with 47 wins this time. In 1950 he won the AAA Midwest Championship and in 1952 was able to celebrate his first national title in this series.

He also started in 32 races for the AAA (or USAC) National Series. His third place in Syracuse in 1954 was his best result.

At the 500 miles of Indianapolis he competed three times between 1956 and 1958, but could never achieve a better result than 13th place (1958). Those who also counted these three starts in the Formula 1 drivers' championship are also three Grand Prix starts in his statistics.

Tolan had an idiosyncratic ritual that he used to start his midget races. In the warm-up lap he smoked a cigarette in the cockpit while driving slowly, which he flicked out of the car during the first fast lap at the start and finish. He believed in a successful race night if he hit the finish line.
