Johnny Hicks
Johnny Hicks (born May 19, 1918 in Kansas City , Missouri , † April 9, 1997 ) was an American country musician . Hicks was instrumental in developing KRLD's Big D Jamboree .
Life
Johnny Hicks started his career before the start of World War II as a presenter on the radio station KRLD in Dallas , Texas . During the war, Hicks served in the army. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Dallas and resumed his work at KRLD.
In 1948, Al Turner and Ed McLemore created the Lone Star Jamboree on KRLD, but program director Clyde Rembert appointed Hicks to run the show. After DJ Hal Horton died of cancer in December 1948, Hicks rose to become KRLD's most influential and popular DJ. He gave the Jamboree the name with which it would play an important role in Texas rockabilly in the mid-1950s , Big D Jamboree .
Hicks made his vinyl debut in 1949 with Star Talent Records. Shortly afterwards he was signed by Columbia Records and played his first five singles with the Troubadors in 1950. In 1951, the single Get Your Kicks (From The Country Hicks) was created in collaboration with the Country Hicks . Shortly afterwards he played his titles for Columbia with the Bluebonnets . His last recordings for Columbia made Hicks in March 1954 with the Country Gentlemen .
Hicks was also active as a songwriter. He wrote the songs Honey Bun and Nuevo Laredo , among others . In the 1950s and 1960s, Hicks continued to work at the Big D Jamboree, where he also performed every Saturday night. At the height of the show in the mid-1950s, Hicks played regularly in front of over 5,000 spectators and shared the stage with Johnny Cash , Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, among others .
