Johnny Horizon

Johnny Horizon was a mascot of the US Bureau of Land Management , which called on the population to stop littering the environment. Together with Smokey Bear , Woodsy Owl or the " Crying Indian ", Johnny Horizon was one of the conservation campaigns of the US environmental movement in the 1970s. Johnny Horizon's motto was This is your land… so keep it clean! ( German  This is your country ... so keep (t) it clean! )

history

The character of Johnny Horizon was introduced in 1968. With the appearance of a cowboy , Johnny Horizon was based on the appearance of the Marlboro Man . The first major environmental protection campaigns with the new mascot began in the early 1970s. All over the United States, so-called Johnny Horizon Events were held, in which hundreds of thousands of US citizens participated. Johnny Horizon has appeared on national television and radio stations. Stars of the time such as Cicely Tyson , Glen Campbell , Ed McMahon , Elston Howard or the British pop group The New Seekers produced various spots with Johnny Horizon. Folk singer Burl Ives released a long-playing record under the motto Johnny Horizon '76 .

On September 19, 1974, then President of the United States, Gerald Ford , passed Proclamation 4315 , making the period September 15 to October 15, 1974 Johnny Horizon '76 Clean Up America Month . The Johnny Horizon '76 program encouraged people to take action to protect the environment by the 200th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence in 1976.

After 1976, the official state campaigns with Johnny Horizon ceased. In Twin Falls , Idaho , Johnny Horizon Day is celebrated every April to this day.

Others

Toy maker Parker Brothers released the Johnny Horizon Environmental Test Kit in the 1970s . This experiment kit contained a total of ten tests that children and young people could use to check environmental pollution. Four of the tests were used to measure air pollution, the other six experiments were used to check water pollution. The test kit has been officially licensed by the United States Department of the Interior .
