Life

Johnny Lion and The Jumping Jewels (1964)

Van Leeuwarden started the band Johnny & His Jewels , later renamed The Jumping Jewels , together with some school friends . The musical role models were the British singer Cliff Richard and the band The Shadows , whose numbers they also successfully interpreted.

After tension within the band, Lion left the band and started a solo career. With his first single Sophietje , dedicated to his girlfriend and business partner Sophie van Kleef, he landed a top 5 hit in the Dutch charts that same year . The following year he had another hit with Tjingeling . More singles appeared by 1970, but they hardly sold any more.

Together with Van Kleef, he opened the Sophie en Johnny boutique in Amsterdam in 1966 , which existed until they separated in 1969.

In 1981 he made a comeback attempt , now as John Lion , with the album Heel Bijzonder , which was unsuccessful. In the 1980s he wrote the title songs for the films Brandende Liefde and Overvallers In De Dierentuin , which hit the charts.

In addition, he appeared as a columnist in the weekly newspaper Panorama and worked as a journalist for various magazines and newspapers.

In 2006 he worked in Jules Deelder's documentary Jazz is my Religion .
