Johnny Lockwood
Johnny Lockwood (born December 7, 1920 in London , England - † April 25, 2013 in Coffs Harbor , Australia ) was an Australian comedian and actor for film , television and theater . He had his most famous role in the Australian soap Number 96, where he played the Hungarian-Jewish owner of a deli.
Life
At the age of 11, Johnny Lockwood lost his parents. Three years later, he applied to be a dancer on a touring show where he developed his talents. At 18, he was finally signed as a comedian with Jack Hylton . However, World War II intervened and Lockwood joined the Royal Air Force in 1942 , from where he was honorably discharged in 1944. He returned to acting and worked as a pantomime , in a variety theater , and on radio and television. In 1949 he appeared at a special court performance at the London Coliseum, where he stumbled and got a bloody nose.
In 1957 Lockwood went to Australia to take part in a ten-week Tivoli Theater Circuit. After that he stayed in Australia for another five years. For a role as Fagin in Lionel Bart's Oliver! he returned to the UK . After the performance of the musical was over, Lockwood returned to Australia for good.
Lockwood spent a year with the television series Sunnyside Up , after which he went to the United States to perform in Las Vegas . He later returned to Australia, where he starred in the classic comedy series The Mavis Bramston Show for two years . Then Lockwood got the lead role in the Canterbury Tales , followed in 1972 by a role in the television series Number 96 .
In 1976 Lockwood's wife Anne Lockwood, with whom he had been in a relationship since 1942, died. In 1980 he married again.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Lockwood gave various guest appearances on Australian series and soaps. In 1985 he had a role in the soap Neighbors as Daphne Lawrence's grandfather Harry Henderson, and in 1991 guest appearances followed in two episodes of the soap E Street . During this time he also starred in feature films. Lockwood continued to appear in the 2000s, for example in the movie Moulin Rouge! and in the miniseries The Potato Factory .
The actor died on April 25, 2013 at the age of 92 in a supervised dormitory .
