Jolly Roger is a 1998 British animated short film directed by Mark Baker .
action
Captain Jolly's pirate ship defeats a transport ship full of whiskey and takes the opportunity to rob young Estelle and her supposed treasure chest. When she turns out to be scratchy and insults the pirates, she is thrown overboard. Screeching, she vows revenge.
Captain Roger's small ship consists only of the captain, the sailor Hugo and a cat. The wrong wind direction drives the boat towards Captain Jolly's pirate ship. Roger and Hugo surrender in a hurry, but realize that no one wants to take them prisoner. The entire crew fell into a deep sleep after over-indulging in whiskey, so Roger can come on board and fetch the supposed treasure chest. The boat sets sail again, but Captain Jolly's parrot reveals that there were thieves on board. A little later, Estelle arrives at Captain Rogers' boat and is pleased that her cloakroom suitcase is also on board - Captain Roger reacts badly to the wrong treasure chest. A short time later, the pirates announce themselves and Estelle again calls for revenge and retribution. However, Captain Roger's boat is so small that it passes under the pirates waiting on deck. Estelle, however, hooks the anchor on the ship, which now fires at the boat Captain Rogers from a distance and causes it to sink. Captain Jolly triumphs, but in the end the boat attached to the ship also pulls Captain Jolly's ship into the depths and all the pirates drown. Captain Roger, Hugo, Estelle, the cat and some rats are left behind. Everyone looks expectantly at Captain Roger, who is at a loss, however.
production
The original plan was to traditionally animate the film on Cels . In the course of the preparatory work, however, director Mark Baker decided to draw the film using a computer. The preliminary drawings were made on paper and, like the backgrounds drawn in oil, were then scanned in. The color was added digitally on the computer. A total of 13 animators were involved in the film.
The music was recorded by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Nic Raine .
