Jonas Baumann (born September 2, 1986 in Dortmund ) is a German sport climber who was particularly successful in bouldering .

Athletic career

Baumann achieved his first German championship title in Coburg in 2001 in the difficulty climbing of youth B. In 2005 and 2006 he became German champion in speed climbing . In 2006 he began to specialize in bouldering on an international level , won the German bouldering championship in the same year and gained his first experience in the World Cup . The following year, he took 3rd place at a home world cup in Erlangen - his greatest sporting success to date. In 2008 he established himself at the top of the bouldering world and finally won his first World Cup in Vail (USA) in 2009 . Also that year he took second place at the Rockmaster in Arco (ITA). In the overall World Cup he achieved 5th place in 2009.

2010 had a shoulder injury, had to end the World Cup season prematurely and take a three-month break. After a healing process that went well, he started again on an international level in 2011. In 2011 he reached the semifinals of three World Cups and was third at the World Cup in Vail. In 2012 he reached the semifinals four times and finished his best season to date in ninth place in the world rankings. Baumann took part in the World Cup until 2014, in 2015 he only took part in the Home World Cup in Munich. In 2014 he was elected as a member of the athletes' commission of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) and represented the discipline of bouldering. After the 2015 season, he retired from competitive sports.

He completed his training as a trainer B competition climbing and is a trained national route screwdriver and referee.

School and study

Baumann also showed extensive interest outside of sport climbing. From 2003 to 2007 he took part in Jugend forscht four times . In 2005, for example, he developed a device that enables blind and visually impaired people to read normal script. In 2007 he developed a test procedure for examining room air for formaldehyde . In doing so, he not only won the regional youth research competition, but also received several special prizes and was awarded a research sponsorship with the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven.

He studied industrial engineering and graduated with a Master of Science degree . Since 2014 he has been doing his doctorate at the Institute for Machining Production at TU Dortmund University .
