Jonas Knutsson (born June 26, 1965 in Umeå ) is a Swedish jazz musician ( sopranino , soprano , alto and baritone saxophone , composition) .

Act

Knutsson, who grew up with the annual Umeå Jazz Festival , first started playing alto saxophone in the local brass band. Then he became a member of the jazz rock band Cabazz . In addition, he dealt with traditional Sami joik .

Since moving to Stockholm in 1983, Knutsson has incorporated elements of Swedish folk, African and classical music into his playing. He has worked with the ensembles Cabazz, Mynta , Elise Einarsdotter Ensemble, Enteli , Nordan, Encore, Triptyk, Larbre Voyage, the Stockholm Folk Big Band , the Hodos Quartet (Olivier Cahours), Turbulent Silence ( Bertrand Renaudin ), Paavo and Gushpanka. He also works with his own bands, such as the Norrland formation with Johan Norberg , with Berger Knutsson Spering and the band Horn Please . His albums with Norrland appeared on the German ACT label . He toured Germany several times with Nils Landgren .

Knutsson was also active as a composer of works for string quartet and saxophone ensembles, such as "Fanfar" (2002) for 20 saxophones and 10 percussion. In 2003 he wrote "Almost Music", a saxophone concerto for soprano saxophone and chamber orchestra; "Almost Crescendo" for jazz quartet, symphony orchestra and choir followed in 2006.

In March 2019 he was awarded the Kungliga Skytteanska Samfundet culture prize.
