Jonathan Adler (born August 11, 1966 in New Jersey ) is an American ceramicist, designer and author. After presenting his first ceramic collection in 1993, he expanded the range to furniture and home accessories five years later and opened a boutique in New York's SoHo district . Today, Jonathan Adler runs a company of the same name, which operates 30 stores worldwide.

Career as a designer

At the age of twelve, Jonathan Adler discovered his interest in pottery, which he had in common with his father. However, he does not work as a ceramist, but works as a lawyer. When Jonathan Adler was later enrolled at Brown University in Rhode Island for semiotics and art history , he spent most of the time not studying these subjects, but made ceramics at the neighboring Rhode Island School of Design . However, his professor there attested that he had no talent for pottery; he should give up this dream and study law instead. After graduating from Brown University, Adler worked as an assistant in the entertainment industry for three years before turning back to ceramics, despite the professor's warning at the Rhode Island School of Design. In a 2013 interview, Adler said that every creative person should have a pessimist in order to rebel against his pessimistic prophecies.

From 1990 Adler gave lessons at the Mud, Sweat 'n' Tears pottery school in New York City and in return was allowed to set up a studio in the school's premises. In 1993 he offered some of his works to buyers at the luxury department store chain Barneys New York, who then ordered from him. The increasing sales figures allowed him to pursue the manufacture of ceramics as a main occupation. In the same year he founded the company named after him. In 1998, Adler opened its first boutique in New York's SoHo neighborhood. Today the company operates 30 stores worldwide '; its products are available from over 1000 retailers. In Germany, the company's products have been offered via Markanto.de since 2001. The product range has been expanded beyond ceramics and now also includes textiles, home accessories and furniture.

Jonathan Adler cooperates with the non-profit organization Aid to Artisans, whose aim is to bring artisans in emerging countries into contact with clients from industrialized nations. Much of the product range is made in this way by artisans in Peru, although South American craft traditions have also served as a source of inspiration for some of the products.

Jonathan Adler designed the furnishings for several hotels and residential buildings. In 2004, he designed the interior of the Parker Palm Springs Hotel. In 2016 he completely redesigned the hotel's appearance; On this occasion, he had a brass sculpture over two meters tall, depicting a banana, installed in a prominent place.

Jonathan Adler served as a juror in both seasons of the television series Top Design on the American television channel Bravo Network.
