Jonathan Geffroy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jonathan Geffroy (also written: Jonathan Jeffery ; * 1983 in Toulouse , Haute-Garonne , France ), also known by his battle name Abu Ibrahim al-Faransi , is a French terrorist and self-appointed emir of the so-called Islamic State (IS).

Life

Geffroy is a French citizen and is said to have been responsible for planning terrorist attacks in France and other countries in Europe as well as for recruiting IS fighters from European countries, especially those who speak French and English.

Geffroy was investigated in 2014 in France on suspicion of terrorism. In the course of the investigation, he could no longer be found. He was accused of having connections to Sabri Essid and his brother Mohamed Merah . Young people who were in contact with him at the time were sentenced to suspended sentences in 2016. There is evidence that Sabri Essid also stayed in Syria or Iraq in 2016 ; he was seen in execution videos by the terrorist militia, among other things. According to information from Reuters , Jeffery spent a long time traveling with Essid in Iraq and Syria.

French media reported in September 2016 that Geffroy was most likely killed in a drone attack in ar-Raqqa .

Geffroy was demonstrably involved in the organization and leadership of European IS fighters in Raqqa, Mosul and most recently al-Bab . In mid-February there were still 1,800 IS fighters in al-Bab, the majority of whom were foreigners.

During the Battle of al-Bab on February 15, 2017, he was captured by troops from Operation Euphrates Shield . Free Syrian Army fighters published pictures of the prisoner and his identity was confirmed on February 21, 2017 by Jean-Charles Brisard, head of the French Terrorism Analysis Center ( Center d'analyse du Terrorisme ). As a result, it was actually the French who had been considered dead since September 2016. Human rights organizations and media close to the Syrian government consider him to be one of the key figures within the IS recruiting organization.

In a video recording made by the Free Syrian Army , he tells in fluent Arabic that he has been in Syria since 2014 ; At that time, although he had been investigated in France, he flew straight from France to Turkey by plane and from there reached Syria via Kilis .

Turkish media have so far reported that Geffroy was captured in al-Bab and is the leader of the terrorist militia in the field of recruitment in Europe. A possible extradition was not reported. Official Turkish authorities did not initially comment. On September 11, 2017, Geffroy was extradited from Turkey to France.
