The Merseburg cathedral pulpit (1517)

At the Merseburg Cathedral , a position of cathedral preacher was first donated around 1490 . The Reformation was introduced in Merseburg from 1544, after a Catholic interlude from 1549 finally in 1561. Since then, as is customary in Protestantism, the cathedral preachers have been the (leading) pastors at the cathedral. Until the 20th century, they usually held other leadership positions ( superintendent , consistorial councilor , and occasionally court preacher ).
