The list of court and cathedral preachers contains the preachers at the Berlin cathedral churches from the 15th century to the present day.

history

Erasmus Chapel and first cathedral church

In 1450 the Erasmus Chapel in the new Berlin Palace was consecrated for the spiritual use of the court . In 1565 a collegiate foundation was established there . In 1536, Elector Joachim II relocated the monastery to the previous Dominican monastery that had been in the neighborhood .

On November 2, 1539, he celebrated the Lord's Supper for the first time in the cathedral church in both forms according to the Protestant understanding. The cathedral monastery remained Catholic until the 1550 / 60s. Not until 1571 was an evangelical order introduced in the monastery.

Development since the 17th century

In 1608 the cathedral monastery was dissolved and converted into a cathedral church. In 1613, Elector Johann Sigismund converted to the Reformed faith, which led to considerable upheavals in the city and among the preachers at the cathedral. These were reformed over the next 200 years, while almost all other churches in Berlin and Cölln remained Lutheran.

In 1640 the offices of court and cathedral preacher were separated. After a large Huguenot community was established in Berlin as a result of the Edict of Potsdam in 1685 , the electors and kings often also called their preachers to be court preachers, without any service at the cathedral being associated with it. In 1750 a new cathedral was consecrated at its current location.

After the union of Lutherans and Reformed in Prussia in 1817, Lutherans could again be appointed cathedral preachers; but the reformed ones dominated. After 1918 cathedral preachers (later chief cathedral preachers) continued to serve.

Structures and tasks

Initially there were two and later up to six cathedral preachers, who were also the Brandenburg-Prussian court preachers. They were graded according to rank; Usually, new court and cathedral preachers began in the lowest rank and advanced to higher positions that became vacant.

The office of court and cathedral preacher was often associated with other tasks at court and in church leadership. They taught the children of the Elector, were advisors or even confidants of the Elector or King, such as Wilhelm Hoffmann with Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Christian Cochius gave the funeral sermon to the Great Elector in 1688 , Benjamin Ursinus anointed Friedrich I as King of Prussia in 1701 . The ruler himself occasionally selected the court preacher after a trial sermon. Some court preachers were ennobled or raised to the rank of bishop. Towards the end of the 20th century, the title of “Dome Preacher” was created and has so far been awarded twice.

Currently (April 2019) there are two pastors and a female pastor with the title “Cathedral Preacher” and an honorary pastor as well as regular prominent guest preachers working at the Berlin Cathedral.
