Karl Ohly

Karl Julius Wilhelm Theodor Ohly (born June 8, 1860 in Haiger , † February 27, 1919 in Nassau (Lahn) ) was a German Protestant theologian, most recently general superintendent.

Born as the son of the pastor Emil Ohly and his wife Caroline, b. Habersang, after graduating from high school in Dillenburg , Ohly studied Protestant theology in Leipzig , Tübingen and Berlin from 1879 . During his studies in 1881 he became a member of the Association of German Students in Berlin . He joined the Christian social politician and court preacher Adolf Stoecker . After a short stay in the theological seminary in Herborn , he was sent to the community of Nied (then a district of Höchst am Main ) in 1883 . He was born on July 22, 1883 ordained and promoted on April 1, 1884 to the pastor. In 1886 he went to the Lutheran parish ( Wuppertal -) Elberfeld to support his sick father and in 1888 took over his pastor. From 1899 to 1913 he worked as court and cathedral preacher to Kaiser Wilhelm II in Berlin, after accompanying the Kaiser on his Palestine trip in 1898 . In 1906 he also took over the management of the Berlin city mission from Adolf Stoecker. In 1913 he returned to his homeland as general superintendent of the Wiesbaden consistorial district , where he died after the traumatic experience of the death of two children and the German defeat in the First World War.

Ohly was married to Emma Muthmann. The following are known of their children:

  • Emil Ohly (1885–1944) , pastor in Stockholm
  • Arthur Ohly (1896–1917), fell as a lieutenant before Verdun
  • Frieda Ohly (1900-1914)
