In Germany, in the area of ​​the Catholic Church, the office of cathedral preacher is only provided for in the statutes of the Cologne Metropolitan Chapter. The cathedral chapter appoints the cathedral preacher today in agreement with the archbishop. Its task is to celebrate and preach during Holy Mass at 12 noon on all Sundays and public holidays. He is continuing a long tradition that has not yet been comprehensively examined. This is also expressed in the place of the sermon, the Renaissance pulpit from 1544, from which St. Peter Canisius (1521–1597) may have preached.
