List of Trier cathedral preachers

The cathedral pulpit in Trier by Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann , was built between 1570 and 1572

At Trier Cathedral , a position as cathedral preacher was established for the first time in 1545 . Archbishop Johann Ludwig von Hagen asked the papal legate at the Reichstag in Regensburg in 1541 to rededicate the benefit of the Beata Maria Aegyptiaca altar in Trier Cathedral as a sermon fund in order to promote the religious instruction of the faithful as part of the Counter-Reformation . This was confirmed by Pope Paul III. conceded.

During the talks about the establishment of a branch in Trier for the Jesuit Order, founded in 1534 , Archbishop Johann von der Leyen asked that three preachers should be among the preachers who would be sent to Trier. Therefore, from July 2nd, 1560, the Trier cathedral preachers were Jesuits until the abolition of the order by Pope Clement XIV on July 21st, 1773.

From 1560 to 1570 the Liebfrauenkirche was also an annex church to the cathedral. The preaching took place on Sundays at 7 a.m. in the cathedral and at 12 p.m. in the Church of Our Lady. From 1570 sermons were also held in the former Franciscan Church , the Trinity Church , which was given over to the Jesuits that year .
