Ambrosius Pelargus

Ambrosius Pelargus OP (* around 1493/94 in Nidda ; † July 5, 1561 in Trier ; born Ambrosius Storch or Storgk ) was a German Dominican and controversial theologian .

Life

Nothing is known about his origins and youth, not even when he entered the Dominican monastery in Frankfurt. In the Heidelberg university registers there is an entry from March 5, 1519: Fr. Ambrosius Storch ex conventu Franckfurdensi ordinis predicatorum . Since he wrote a preface to Johannes Dietenberger's pamphlet De votis monasticis iudicium in Cologne in 1524 , he used the Greek name Pelargus .

From 1525/26 he studied theology in Basel and from 1529 in Freiburg im Breisgau , where he received his doctorate theol in 1533. PhD. He had published several pamphlets on the doctrine of the Eucharist against the reformers Ulrich Zwingli and Johannes Oekolampad . From 1529 he also quarreled with Erasmus von Rotterdam , who had fled to Freiburg , but became friends with him in 1533 after being mediated by Ludwig Bär . In 1539 he published an anthology of his pamphlets and his correspondence with Erasmus.

In 1534 the Archbishop of Trier , Johann III. von Metzenhausen († 1540) Ambrosius Storch as teacher of theology at the University of Trier , and in 1540 he took part in the Hagenau Religious Discussion .

On July 13, 1545, Johann IV. Ludwig von Hagen appointed Pelargus as the first cathedral preacher in Trier . In 1546 the Archbishop sent him as procurator to the Council of Trent , where he mainly worked on the decree on the Eucharist and gave a major speech on May 10th. He moved on to Bologna , also as a representative of Cologne, where he incurred the emperor's disfavor and on August 23, 1547, his power of attorney was withdrawn. In 1551 he accompanied the archbishop back to Trento. Now he worked on the decrees on penance , holy oils and the sacrament of Holy Orders .

After his return in 1552, he fell ill and was unable to continue teaching. In 1561, as dean of the theological faculty, and the rector of the university, Johannes Houst , handed over the license to teach philosophy and humanities to the Jesuits. He was buried in the (former) Dominican monastery in Trier .
