Jonathan Mendelsohn, Baron Mendelsohn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jonathan Neil Mendelsohn, Baron Mendelsohn (born December 30, 1966 in the United Kingdom ) is a British lobbyist and organizer of the Labor Party . In 2007 he was appointed director of the party's general campaign funds.

Life

With Neal Lawson and Ben Lucas , Mendelsohn founded the political lobbying firm LLM Communications in 1997 , which had good connections to the New Labor government of Prime Minister Tony Blair . He was also a spokesperson and lobbyist for the gaming company PartyGaming .

Mendelsohn wrote to the controversial financier of the Labor Party, David Abrahams , that he was one of the "strongest supporters" of Labor. In 1998, his and Derek Draper's statements were taped in which both of them boasted to entrepreneurial investigative journalist Greg Palast that they could give clients access to ministers and tax breaks; this scandal was given the name “lobby gate”. Draper denied the allegations. In the same affair, an undercover journalist turned to Mendelsohn, claiming he was a representative of American energy companies trying to circumvent environmental laws. Despite the assertion by LLM Communications that "we believe that there will be a new kind of 'ethical winner' 'who will prove that companies are no longer operating in a moral vacuum," Mendelsohn advised the reporter to formulate the corporate plans in a more environmentally friendly way, because Tony Blair is very concerned about a green image.

In 2007 Mendelsohn donated funds for Peter Hain's campaign for the post of deputy leader of the Labor Party.

Mendelsohn sits on the board of Directors of Progress , a New Labor political group, and is a trustee of the UK welfare organization of the Holocaust Educational Trust and the UK branches of the non-profit New Israel Fund . He is also the former chairman of the parliamentary group of the Labor Friends of Israel , the Finchley United Synagogue and the Union of Jewish Students .

According to the Daily Telegraph , Mendelsohn is closely associated with the North London Jewish community and is a good friend of Lord Levy , who was at the center of an affair in 2006 in which money was reported to have flowed to political parties for peer-to-peer recognition.

On September 5, 2013, Mendelsohn was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Mendelsohn , of Finchley in the London Borough of Barnet , to the personal nobility and has been a member of the House of Lords since then.

Mendelsohn is married and has four children. His wife Nicola née Clyne, now Lady Mendelsohn, was named Facebook's Vice President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa in May 2013 . She was previously the Chair of the Karmarama Advertising Agency , Vice Chair of the Gray London Communications Agency and President of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising .
