Jonathan R. Cole

Jonathan Richard Cole (born August 27, 1942 ) is an American sociologist who works in the field of the sociology of science .

Life

Cole studied sociology at Columbia University with Robert K. Merton, among others, and received his doctorate there in 1969 with a thesis on The Social Structure of Science . Since 1968 he has taught at Columbia University, from 1976 as a full professor. In addition to his teaching activities, he had various functions in the university administration, from 1989 to 2003 he was Provost . His research on the sociology of science received financial support from the National Science Foundation for over two decades .

With his brother Stephen Cole , he was one of the first sociologists to introduce quantitative methods (publication and citation indicators) into the sociology of science. In addition to qualitative and quantitative analyzes of the publication activity of scholars, he was particularly interested in studying the role of women scientists in the United States. Much of this work was done in collaboration with Harriet Zuckerman . In 2009 he published an extensive study on the position of the US universities in the global science system.

From 1975 to 1976 he was a Guggenheim fellow . He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1992 and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 2004 . In 2005 he became an elected member of the American Philosophical Society . In 1996 and 2003 he received the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .
