Stephen Cole (sociologist)

Stephen Cole (born June 1, 1941 ) is an American sociologist.

Life

Stephen Cole studied sociology at Columbia University with Robert K. Merton and Paul F. Lazarsfeld . With Merton, Harriet Zuckerman and his brother Jonathan R. Cole he worked on an empirically founded sociology of knowledge .

Cole became professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook , the university honored him with the title Distinguished Professor in 2007, and he retired in 2011.

Cole published on the history of sociology , the sociology of education , the sociology of gender and the sociology of medicine . He wrote a reader on empirical research methods that was successful in teaching.

Cole became known through his research contributions on social stratification in the scientific community and scientometry . The Ortega hypothesis formulated in this context by his brother Jonathan R. Cole and himself is, however, not undisputed.
