Joop Stokkel

Joop Stokkel (born April 11, 1967 ) is a Dutch athlete who was active in disabled sports as a swimmer and rider .

At the age of seven, he climbed the fence of an electricity company behind his parents' house. When he ran into an electric field, he was hit by 50,000 volts. As a result, his left leg and right arm had to be amputated. After the accident, he started with judo . After the sport was not so great for him, he started swimming and riding in 1982 .

At the 1988 Paralympics in Seoul and the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona , Stokkel won a total of five gold, three silver and three bronze medals in swimming competitions.

At the Paralympics 2000 in Sydney he won the gold medal in the Para-Dressage in the individual competition and silver in the team competition with the Dutch team. At the 2004 Paralympics in Athens , Stokkel led the Dutch team as the flag bearer during the opening ceremony. In the equestrian competitions he competed with the horse Pegasus of the Olympic champion Anky van Grunsven .

From November 2012 on, Stokkel was a member of the Para-Equestrian Committee of the FEI World Equestrian Federation for three years .
