Jordanes (also called Jordan ; † 984 ) was the first bishop of Poland .

Life

Jordanes was called to the office of mission bishop in Poznan in 968 . As a mission bishop he was directly subordinate to the Pope in Rome . He came to Poland in 966 with the Bohemian Princess Dubrawka either from Italy or from the Rhineland , where Mieszko I , the Polish prince , wanted to be baptized and his country to be Christianized .

His successor in the office of Bishop of Posen was Bishop Unger around 992, after about eight years of vacancy .

The Jordanes annals are named after him.
