Jordanita benderi is a butterfly fromthe ram family (Zygaenidae). The species is dedicated to the explorer Rupprecht Bender .

features

The moths reach a forewing length of 11.6 to 14.6 millimeters in the males and 9.2 millimeters in the females. The head, thorax and abdomen have a yellowish green shimmer and are slightly hairy. The antennae are long and slender, heavily combed and consist of about 36 segments. The upper forewings shimmer yellowish green. The hind wings are light gray and slightly translucent . The undersides of the wings are light gray and not covered with shiny scales .

In the males, the aedeagus is small, the distal part is much wider than the proximal part. The cornutus has a broad base and is comma-shaped. The tip is long and curved.

In females, the antrum is broadly bulged, the proximal ring and the lateral half, which is provided with a comb-like structure, are heavily sclerotized . The rounded distal part and the other side of the antrum are translucent. The ductus bursae is narrow and starts laterally near the ostium. Proximally, it is broader and heavily furrowed and distally curved and kinked. The corpus bursae is teardrop-shaped.

Egg, caterpillar and pupa have not yet been described.

Similar species

Jordanita cognata is slightly larger with a forewing length of 14.0 to 17.5 millimeters in the males, the upper sides of the forewing are yellowish green. The abdomen has an intense golden shimmer, the antennae are long and consist of 38 to 41 segments. The aedeagus is significantly larger. It has a different shape and the cornutus is shaped differently.

Jordanita maroccana is smaller and darker, the thorax is very hairy. Aedeagus and Cornutus are different.

Jordanita cognata is only found in Algeria and Tunisia , while J. benderi is endemic to Morocco.

Jordanita maroccana and J. benderi appear sympathetically in Pays Zaer Zaiane in Morocco and fly at the same time.

distribution

Jordanita benderi is endemic to Morocco in the hills of the Pays Zaer Zaiane and in the High Atlas .

biology

The caterpillars presumably develop on the woolly safflower ( Carthamus lanatus ), on which characteristic feeding marks and fresh leaf mines could be found in May on the type locality ( Asni , High Atlas ). The moths fly from March to early May.
