Jordanita is a genus of butterflies fromthe ram family (Zygaenidae).

features

The head, thorax , abdomen and top of the forewing shimmer brightly green or blue and have an almost metallic sheen. The shimmer is caused by scales with a sieve-like fine structure that refract and reflect the light. The fore wings are broad or narrow and triangular, the hind wings more or less rectangular. In some species the females are smaller and have narrower wings than the males, in other species the females and males are the same size. The antennae of the males are double combed and taper to a point. Coremata - retractable pheromone pockets - are not available. The genitals of the males have diverse characteristics in the various subgenera. The uncus is heavily sclerotized and prominent. The blades have a translucent area distally . In females, the prebursa is either present or absent. Females only have double-combed antennae in one species, all others have either saw-shaped or double-saw-shaped antennae that taper to a point.

distribution

Most of the members of the genus Jordanita are native to the Western Palearctic .

biology

The caterpillars of all species develop on Asteraceae , where they mine in the leaves . Some species feed freely on the forage plants after the diapause , while other species continue to mine until pupation. In a few species, later caterpillar stages bore into the stems of the forage plants. All species form only one generation a year.

Systematics

The genus Jordanita consists of six subgenera with 32 species. Six species are native to Central Asia . It is named after the German-British entomologist Karl Jordan . The following overview lists the 26 species native to the Western Palearctic.
