Jordanita volgensis is a butterfly fromthe ram family (Zygaenidae). The species wasdescribedas Ino volgensis by Heinrich Benno Möschler based on specimens from Sarepta (today a district of Volgograd ).

features

The moths reach a forewing length of 11.5 to 15.5 millimeters in the males and 8.8 to 9.5 millimeters in the females. The wings are translucent and only weakly scaled. Head, thorax , legs and abdomen shimmer golden, in the subspecies J. v. volgensis golden green and in the subspecies J. v. muelleri and J. v. grandis bluish green. The frons is about twice as wide as the compound eyes . The antennae are short and have a bluish green shimmer. They consist of 31 to 34 segments, in the females they are slightly serrated. The upper sides of the forewings shimmer golden, in the subspecies volgensis golden-green and in the subspecies muelleri and grandis bluish green. The upper side of the hind wing and the underside of the wing are light gray. The females are significantly smaller than the males, especially in populations that produce large males.

In the males, the uncus is long and slender. The valves are elongated dorsally and ventrally have a short, triangular, tapering distal process. The aedeagus is very short and thickened. He has two large cornuti; the shorter one is almost straight, the longer one is curved and funnel-shaped proximally .

The female genitalia is very small. The ostium is relatively wide. The antrum is stocky and about as wide as the ostium. It is translucent, has a smooth surface and flows into the equally wide, longitudinally furrowed ductus bursae. The proximal bursal duct is wide and straight, distally it narrows and is curved. The 8th sternite and tergite are very large and heavily sclerotized.

Subspecies

Three subspecies are currently known :

  • Jordanita volgensis volgensis (Möschler, 1862): The subspecies is characterized by small front wings with a length of 11.5 to 12.0 millimeters. The forewings are translucent, they shimmer just like the body strong golden to golden-green. The subspecies inhabits the plains on the lower Volga, the Caucasus and the southern Urals, southern Siberia and northern Kazakhstan.
  • Jordanita volgensis muelleri Alberti, 1974: The subspecies is characterized by small front wings with a length of 11.5 to 12.5 millimeters. It is more densely scaled than the subspecies volgensis , the upper surface of the forewings is bluish green or green, the body is dark and shimmers bluish green. The subspecies is native to Transcaucasia.
  • Jordanita volgensis grandis Alberti, 1974: The subspecies is very large and is characterized by a fore wing length of up to 15.5 millimeters in males. It is more densely scaled than the subspecies volgensis and occurs in Turkey.

Similar species

In Transcaucasia , Jordanita paupera comes sympathetically with J. v. muelleri , both species are very similar. In Russia , Jordanita budensis is sympathetic with J. v. From the lower reaches of the Volga to the southern Urals . volgensis , both species are also very similar. The specimens of the subspecies J. v. grandis are very large, dark and densely scaled in Turkey . They resemble Jordanita notata , Jordanita hector and Jordanita kurdica , but can be differentiated genitally morphologically .

distribution

Jordanita volgensis is widespread in eastern Ukraine and on the Crimean Peninsula , in southern Russia (from the Volga to southern Siberia ), in Transcaucasia , Turkey and Syria .

The species colonizes steppe biotopes .

biology

The moths fly from early May to June. The other way of life of the species is so far unknown.
