features

Flower head

The woolly safflower is an annual plant that reaches heights of 25 to 75 centimeters. The thistle-like species is initially cobweb-woolly, but becomes bald over time. It is usually branched in its upper area. The stems are round and straw-colored. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate, leathery and their base is broadened. The upper leaves are serrated to pinnate and cupped and seated around the half-stem. Their sections are triangular and piercing. The flower heads are 2 to 3 centimeters in size. They are arranged individually at the ends of the branches and surrounded by the upper leaves. The appendage of the outer bracts is toothed with thorns. The inner bracts are much shorter than the outer, elongated-lanceolate and have a narrow, membranous and entire or toothed appendage. The species only forms tubular flowers . These are golden yellow or pale yellow in color and have red veins. The fruits are dark brown and square. The pappus is made up of several rows of scales that are lashed and brownish in color.

Flowering time is from April to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 44 or 64.
