Jorge Cafrune
Jorge Antonio Cafrune (born August 8, 1937 in Jujuy , † February 1, 1978 in Tigre ), called "El Turco" (the Turk), was one of the most popular Argentinian folk singers and a researcher, collector and disseminator of Argentinian culture.
Life
Jorge Cafrune was born in the Estancia "La Matilde" of El Sunchal, in Perico , a town in the Jujuy province. Because of his ancestry, his grandparents are Syrian and Lebanese immigrants, he was nicknamed "Turco" (Eng. Turk). He completed his schooling in San Salvador de Jujuy , where he took guitar lessons from Nicolas Lamadrid.
In 1957 he recorded his first record with the band Las voces de Huayra , which was renamed Los Cantores del Alba in 1960 and was managed by Ariel Ramírez. From 1962 Cafrune initiated in Cosquín the "Festival Internacional de Folklore de Cosquín". At his suggestion, Mercedes Sosa took part in it in 1965. In 1966, on one of his visits to the smaller villages, he met the young singer José Larralde, whom he also promoted.
In 1967 he went on tour under the motto “De a caballo por mi patria” as a tribute to Ángel Vicente “Chacho” Peñaloza. Following the example of the gauchos, Cafrune traveled across Argentina to carry their art across the country.
After living in Spain for several years, where he married Lourdes López Garzón, he returned to his country in 1977. At that time Argentina was under the military dictatorship of Jorge Rafael Videla . The government saw Cafrune's music as a threat, especially in his political songs Zamba de mi esperanza and Luna Cautiva , which he performed shortly before his death at the Festival de Cosquin : “Even if it is not part of the approved repertoire, if it is mine People demand, I will sing it. "
On January 31, 1978, he began a ride with Fino Gutiérrez that was supposed to lead 750 km from the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires to Yapeyú , the birthplace of the national hero José de San Martín . On the Ruta Provincial 27 (. Tirso de Molina and Av Benavidez) they were in the late evening by a Dodge - pickup approached. Cafrune suffered injuries to his chest and head from the fall and hoof kicks, to which he died that same night. At the wheel was 19-year-old Héctor Emilio Díaz, who was later acquitted.
Lt. Col. Carlos Enrique Villanueva, who was working at the La Perla concentration camp in the province of Cordoba at the time, was quoted by Liliana Geuna detained there: "He had to be killed to forestall other [opponents of the government]." First Lieutenant Salvador Horacio Paino quoted former Minister López Rega: "This Turk doesn't deserve to die in a bed ... you have to break up with him before his voice and his cursed guitar do it to me."
