Jorge Taiana

Jorge Enrique Taiana (born May 31, 1950 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine diplomat and politician of the Peronist Party . Under the governments of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner , he was Foreign Minister from December 1, 2005 to June 19, 2010 .

Life

Jorge Taiana graduated from the Colegio Nacional Buenos Aires in 1968 with the achievement of the Abitur (Bachiller). He then studied sociology at the Universidad de Buenos Aires , where he graduated in 1972 with the title of Licenciado . From 1983 to 1989 he successfully took part in a master’s course in social sciences at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO).

Jorge Taiana was a researcher at the Universidad Nacional de Quilmes and worked in the field of human rights , where he received great recognition.

In the 1970s he worked alongside his father in the Ministry of Education and gained a reputation as a militant Peronist. Despite death threats from the Alianza Anticomunista Argentina , he decided to stay in Argentina. He was arrested in 1975 and paid for his decision with seven years in prison, most of it in Rawson Jail .

After his release from prison, Taiana worked in the academic environment until he was appointed advisor to the Chamber of Deputies ' Foreign Affairs Committee (1987-1989). From 1989 he held various posts in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Between 1992 and 1995 he represented Argentina as ambassador to Guatemala and Belize . From 1996 to 2001 he was Executive Director of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the OAS . His candidacy for this position received broad support in Latin America.

President Kirchner appointed Taiana Foreign Minister on December 1, 2005. He replaced Rafael Bielsa , whose representative he had been since 2003. As Foreign Minister, Taiana chaired the United Nations Security Council . He dealt, among other topics, with Argentine foreign relations, with questions of Argentina's claim to sovereignty, such as the problem of the Falkland Islands , the conflict between Argentina and Uruguay over the paper mills and Venezuela's accession to Mercosur .

Taiana is the son of Jorge Alberto Taiana , Juan Perón's personal doctor . He is married and has three children.
