The Bürkholz formation was a rock band in the GDR . The drummer Thomas Bürkholz and the guitarist Heinz Geisler founded the Leipzig band towards the end of 1972. The other members included the singer Hans-Jürgen Beyer , the keyboardist Michael Heubach , the bassist Frank Czerny and the saxophonist Wolfgang Zahn.

The group was very popular mainly because of their live concerts. Within a few months, the band established themselves in the GDR charts through concerts, radio and television appearances alongside groups such as the Puhdys or the Klaus Renft Combo .

In the 1972 documentary If Everyone Dancing How They Wanted, Well! Excerpts from a concert by the band in the "Klubhaus der Eisenbahner" in Berlin-Karlshorst are shown.

Compulsory dissolution on July 20, 1973

After less than a year, the Bürkholz formation was banned on July 20, 1973. The reason was a concert on June 22, 1973, which got out of hand during the company festival of a combine in the Radeberger Vorwärts-Stadion: In the course of the performance there were rioting by spectators against the security forces. In the end, the stage was even stormed. The event had to be canceled.

The Leipzig public prosecutor reported to the department head for culture about this event and recommended that he check the Bürkholz formation's permission to play. The group whipped up the audience with their ecstatic presentation and therefore triggered the riot.

After a criminal offense, each member had to pay a fine of 300 marks . In addition to the forced dissolution of the group, gambling bans were sometimes imposed: Thomas Bürkholz was initially no longer allowed to practice his profession as a musician for an indefinite period of time. Heinz Geisler, Wolfgang Zahn and Frank-Peter Czerny were banned from gambling for one year. Michael Heubach and singer Hans-Jürgen Beyer were spared. The titles of the Bürkholz formation have been blocked. A planned tour with the top band Omega through their home country Hungary was canceled at short notice due to the breakup of the band.

Beyer began a career as a pop singer . Geisler later became a musician and composer for the GDR band Pilot . Heubach briefly became a member of the Horst-Krüger-Band , with which he recorded the title Tagesreise , which had already been composed in the Bürkholz formation , and founded the band Automobil in 1974 with Nina Hagen as the singer. Czerny switched to principle . Bürkholz was able to join SET in 1975 .
