Thomas Bürkholz

Thomas Bürkholz (born February 26, 1949 ) is a German musician and composer .

Bürkholz studied at the district music school and the music college in Leipzig . For many years he worked as a freelance composer for incidental music at the Leipziger Schauspielhaus and other theaters . In addition, Bürkholz played for many years as a popular rock musician with his own bands. As a drummer he was a member of the Klaus Renft Combo , which was re-established in 1967 , head of the Bürkholz formation and was a member of the SET band from 1975 to 1985 . His symphony Die Säulen des Memnon , composed in 1983 and for which he was awarded the Critics 'Prize of the Journalists' Association, was followed by an oratorio , two further symphonies, an opera , two ballets , an organ cycle and several chamber music works .

Since 1985 Thomas Bürkholz has also been active as a conductor , director and author in the theater, in multimedia productions and at major events. In his dramatic stage work, Bürkholz primarily focuses on the musical and rock opera genres . So far 17 works for theater stages that have been performed successfully several times have been created.

In 2000 his first opera Rheinsberger Masquerade was premiered. At the opening of the Palace Theater Rheinberg conducted Hans-Peter Kirchberg the work. The world premiere of his musical The Wizard of Oz took place in the same year at the theater summer in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In 2004 Bürkholz was in charge of the musical responsibility for the gala for the opening of the Berlin Olympic Stadium . In 2006 he wrote the stage version of the musical Heisser Sommer on behalf of the Rostock Volkstheater based on the popular DEFA music film of the same name , the music of which was written by Gerd and Thomas Natschinski . He directed the premiere production in Rostock in summer 2005/2006 under the direction of Steffen Piontek .

In the summer of 2009 he conducted the Berlin new production of the musical Heisser Sommer in Berlin-Grünau / Regattastrecke and became composer and musical director for 2009 and 2010 at the Vineta Festival in Zinnowitz on Usedom. At the beginning of 2010 he composed the music for the pieces Die Nadel der Cleopatra (directed by Cordula Trantow ) and Zebralla (directed by Dieter Hallervorden ) at the Schlosspark Theater in Berlin-Steglitz .

Thomas Bürkholz is President of the Dramatiker Union and a member of the Advisory Board of the Artists' Social Fund , the German Composers Archive and the Franz Grothe Foundation .
