Georges Augustin "Joris" Helleputte (born August 31, 1852 in Ghent , † February 22, 1925 in Leuven ) was a Belgian architect and politician of the Catholic Party .

biography

After studying, Helleputte initially worked as an engineer for bridge construction and then as an architect and professor of architecture at the Catholic University of Leuven .

As an architect, he mainly worked in Leuven and created, among other things, the Justus Lipsius College (1878), the anatomy lecture hall in the Vesalius Institute, a ballroom for the Société Générale des Etudiants and the first planning for the Agricultural Institute. However, he was also active in other parts of Belgium and planned, among other things, the facade of the Kruisherenkerk in Diest . His architectural work was under the influence of Jean-Baptiste Bethune .

In addition to his work as an architect, he was also involved in the Catholic Party and, as its candidate, was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1889 , where he represented the interests of the Maaseik arrondissement until 1924 .

In May 1907 he was appointed to a government for the first time by Prime Minister Jules de Trooz as Minister of Agriculture. In the subsequent government of his brother-in-law Frans Schollaert , he was minister for post, railways and telegraphy from January 1908 to 1910. After a cabinet reshuffle, between 1910 and June 1911 he again took over the post of Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Public Works.

For his services he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on February 23, 1912 .

In the government of Prime Minister Charles de Broqueville he was again Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Public Works from 1912 to June 1918.

Helleputte was also active in numerous other organizations. In 1890 he was a founding member of the Belgian Farmers' Union ( Belgische Boerenbond ), of which he was first chairman between 1890 and 1925. In 1898 he also became chairman of the independent Flemish cultural association Davidsfonds . He was also one of the founders of the Katholiek Vlaams Hoogstudenten Verbond in 1902 .
