José Antonio Caballero (born February 4, 1754 in Aldeadávila de la Ribera ( Salamanca province ), † February 23, 1821 in Salamanca ) was a Spanish nobleman and politician. He was Marquis of Caballero and Minister of Justice from 1798 to 1808.

Life

Caballero was the son of Pedro Antonio Caballero y Vicente-Campo and María Caballero del Pozo y Herrera. He studied law at the University of Salamanca and in 1788 married a lady-in-waiting of Maria Luise , Princess of Asturias and future Queen of Spain, which was beneficial to his career. After holding various posts in the provincial administration, he became a lawyer with the Supreme War Council in 1797 and, on August 24, 1798, succeeded Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos as Minister of Justice. He was one of the particularly conservative circles and in 1807 presented a reform plan for the Spanish universities. As a result of his participation in the Aranjuez uprising(March 1808) he lost his ministerial office, but remained a councilor. Then he became a member of the junta that Joachim Murat elected president, and was one of the signatories of the letter in which Napoleon was asked to appoint one of his relatives as the new ruler of Spain. The choice of the French emperor fell on his brother Joseph Bonaparte , as his state councilor Caballero then acted. He headed the Justice Section for Church Affairs. After Joseph Bonaparte was deposed, he followed him to France in 1814 and settled in Bordeaux . He did not return to Spain until 1820 and died a year later in Salamanca.
