José Cabanis (1962)

José Cabanis (born March 22, 1922 in Toulouse , † October 6, 2000 in Balma ) was a French lawyer and writer who is counted among the most successful representatives of the French realistic and psychological novel. He also received attention as an essayist, literary critic, and columnist.

life and work

The Jesuit student studied philosophy and law in Toulouse. During the Second World War he had to do forced labor for two years (1943–1945) in a German ammunition factory (in Kenzingen in southern Baden ). After the war he settled as a lawyer not far from his hometown. As a writer, he became known with the novel Le Bonheur du jour , for which he received the Prix ​​des Critiques in 1961 . His narrative prose revolves around the narrowness of the provinces, the father-son conflict, the forlornness of man. "The characters appear strangely misty, everything is sketched pale, but despite the shadowy nature of this world, the melancholy reflections force the reader under their spell," says Kindler's New Literature Lexicon . In 1990 Cabanis was appointed to the Académie française . In 2003, a newly built multimedia library in his hometown of Toulouse was given the name Médiathèque José Cabanis .
