José Francisco Bias Fortes

José Francisco Bias Fortes (born April 3, 1891 in Barbacena , Minas Gerais , † March 30, 1971 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian politician .

Career

Bias Fortes was first prefect of his native town Barbacena between 1937 and 1945. In 1947 he ran for the first time for governor in the state of Minas Gerais, but was defeated by Milton Campos . In August 1950, President Eurico Gaspar Dutra brought him into his cabinet as Minister of Justice and the Interior, of which he was a member until January 1951.

In his second candidacy, he was elected governor of Minas Gerais and was from January 31, 1956 to January 31, 1961 in office.

The German Federal President Theodor Heuss awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1958 . In 1960 he received the Great Silver Decoration on Ribbon for Services to the Republic of Austria .
