José Francisco Zelaya y Ayes

José Francisco Zelaya y Ayes (* 1798 in Juticalpa, Olancho; † October 20, 1848 in Ciudad de Comayagua ) was President of Honduras from September 21, 1839 to December 31, 1840 .

Life

His parents were Dominga Ayes and José Maria Zelaya López. In 1819 Zelaya y Ayes, Guadalupe married Gónzales Herrera. In March 1835 he married Mercedes Gónzales Herrera in Jocón.

After José Maria Bustillo and Coronel Brito resigned, the Parliament elected José Francisco Zelaya y Ayes as President.

General José de la Trinidad Francisco Cabañas Fiallos had Ciudad de Comayagua occupied on August 28, 1839 .

The government cabinet of Mónico Bueso Soto Francisco de Aguilar moved its seat of government to Jutigalpa, Olancho. José Francisco Zelaya y Ayes took up his post on September 21, 1839 in Jutigalpa, Olancho.

On September 25, 1839, José Francisco Morazán Quezada had 800 soldiers from El Salvador, 2,000 soldiers from Honduras and Nicaragua under Francisco Ferrera beaten near San Pedro Perulapán , as the governments of Honduras and Nicaragua wanted to break away from the Central American Confederation . Zelaya y Ayes was informed of the defeat by Chief of Staff Nicolás Espinoza .

Cabañas troops occupied Tegucigalpa, advanced to Choluteca, occupied Nacaome and returned to El Salvador.

Batalla de la Soledad

On November 13, 1839, the troops of Zelaya y Ayes were defeated by troops from Cabañas at the Battle of La Soledad near Tegucigalpa. Zelaya y Ayes sought help from the government of Nicaragua under Tomás Valladares , which sent 500 soldiers under the command of Manuel Quijano.

Together with troops from Olancho, they defeated the troops from Cabañas on January 31, 1840. On March 19, 1840, the forces of Morazán could not take Guatemala City and they withdrew. Both defeats by troops of the Central American Confederation and the flight from Morazán to Perú stabilized the regime of Zelaya y Ayes.

In August 1840, the newspaper El Redactor Constitucional appeared as the government organ of Zelaya y Ayes, in which the complaints of British citizens in November 1840, which the British consul, Frederick Chatfield, were presented.

On December 15, 1840, a Central American parliament met in the city of Gracias to find a peace agreement for Central America, which was not found.

Security measures have been taken for ports and inland cities . The defense capabilities of fortresses Omoa and Trujillo have been increased. A regulation on the working hours of government employees has been issued. A court for first-instance decisions has been set up in Danlí . On June 6, 1840, the Cabildos elected a president and member of parliament.

On December 30, 1840, General Francisco Ferrera was elected by parliament. On January 1, 1841, he became president.

At the constituent assembly, which met on December 11, 1847, Zelaya y Ayes was chairman.

When he died on October 20, 1848, he held the post of Ministro General in the government cabinet of Juan Nepomuceno Fernández Lindo y Zelaya .
