José Horacio Basualdo (born June 20, 1963 in Campana , Buenos Aires Province ) is a former Argentinian national soccer player . He played as a midfielder .

Basualdo started his career at Villa Dálmine in 1981 before moving to Deportivo Mandiyú in 1987 . In 1989 Basualdo moved to VfB Stuttgart in Germany, where he wore the Swabian jersey from 1989 to 1991. He played 51 competitive games in two seasons. He was featured 44 times in the Bundesliga (two goals) and seven times in the DFB Cup. With VfB he was sixth in the table in these two seasons. He later played for numerous Argentinian clubs and for FC Extremadura in Spain. With Vélez Sarsfield, he won the Copa Libertadores in 1995 and the World Cup , which he won again in 2000 wearing the Boca Juniors jersey .

He was part of the Argentine national team at the 1990 World Cup and was used in all seven games up to the final. He didn't score a goal. He was also in the squad for the 1994 World Cup , but was only used in the 3-2 defeat in the round of 16 against Romania .

In June 2009, Jose Basualdo became a trainer at the Chilean Apertura finalist Universidad de Chile.

After his last coaching of Oriente Petrolero in 2015 , he took over the coaching position at the Uruguayan first division club Atlético Cerro in mid-July 2017 .
