José Luzán
José Luzán , also José Luzán y Martínez (* 1710 in Saragossa , † October 21, 1785 ), was a Spanish painter .
Live and act
Luzán was the son of the painter and gilder Juan Luzán. Thanks to the patronage of the Pignatelli family, he was able to study in Naples , where he met the Italian master Giuseppe Mastroleo . He returned to Saragossa around 1730 to start an academy. From 1741 he worked at the court of the Spanish King Philip V in Madrid. Studying the collections of the royal palace allowed him to refine his style. In addition to the gloomy tone of his early works, he took a liking to warm colors. In the 1760s he created large-format works. Among his students were Francisco Bayeu y Subías and Francisco de Goya .
Luzán later left Madrid to head the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Zaragoza. However, this soon had to close due to financial difficulties. When it was reopened in 1784, Luzán's health no longer allowed teaching. He died in his hometown in 1785.
