José Maria Marques

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

José Maria Marques was Governor of Portuguese Timor from June 3, 1834 to January 22, 1839 .

The predecessor of Marques Miguel da Silveira Lorena died in the year of his arrival in 1832. The administration of the colony was then taken over by a councilor ( Conselho Governativo ), but there was a dispute. Brother Vicente Ferreira Varela therefore had the other two members of the council arrested and ruled the colony alone until Marques arrived in Portuguese Timor in 1834. Marques expelled all missionaries from the colony that same year. They shouldn't return until 20 years later. The reason was a decree by King Pedro IV that the power of the church should be restricted after the Liberal Revolution in Portugal . The governor's power should also be limited by separating military and administrative powers. But the following year this change was reversed.

At the same time, Marques began expanding Dilis into a city. Apart from the fortress, the governor's house and St. António's church, the main town of the colony until then consisted only of huts with roofs made of palm fronds. Today's Rua 30 de Agosto in the center of Dilis was previously named after José Maria Marques.
