José Maria Ximenes

José Maria Ximenes is a journalist from East Timor . He is a member of the East Timor Press Council ( Portuguese Conselho de Imprensa ) and director of East Timor's second largest newspaper, the Timor Post .

Career

After school, Ximenes was a volunteer at the communal radio LARASATI in Baucau from 1976 to 1978 and worked for the Farol newspaper in Balide ( Dili ) until 1984 . The newspaper was published by external school students from the Colégio de São José in order to strengthen the culture and identity of the East Timorese during the Indonesian occupation. Ximenes got his first permanent position as a journalist in 1993 at Suara Timor Timur (STT). Until 1999 he was editor and production manager there.

In the independence movement, Ximenes worked for OJETIL , RENETIL and in 1999 for their newspaper Vox Populi and Dewan Solidaritas Mahasiswa, Pelajar dan Pemuda Timor Timur ( German  Student Solidarity Council for students and youth in East Timur )

During the crisis in East Timor in 1999 , the STT facilities were completely destroyed. Adérito Hugo da Costa and Ximenes, whom he knew from STT, founded the Timor Post in 2000. Ximenes became executive editor, later editor-in-chief, and finally director of the newspaper. Ximenes also held various positions, including media analysis coordinator at the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in Dili, trainer at the ICFJ, member of the Council of Radio-Televisão Timor Leste (RTTL) and executive director of Gardamor Radio & Television (GRTV). Ximenes is also a co-founder of the Associação de Jornalistas de Timor-Leste (AJTL) and the Sindicato dos Jornalistas de Timor-Leste (SJTL). He also founded the weekly Business Timor .

Ximenes was elected to the newly created press council in 2015 as a representative of the media companies. The swearing-in took place on May 10th. The term of office of the council members lasts until 2020.
