Chanson

In 2013, together with the Berlin musician and lyricist Frank U. Augustin and the Cologne filmmaker and dramaturge Lih Janowitz, a new format of the cabaret concert “Am I knef?” Was created. In collaboration with Knef friend Petra Roek , who wrote the Knef biography “Asks not why”, an exciting program was created with deep insights into the life of Hildegard Knef , into which her songs, hits and chansons are emotionally integrated. This was followed by “La Brel”, a program with chansons and ballads by Jacques Brel & Francois Villon - a historical journey through the eventful history of the two famous bards, over five centuries apart and yet closely related. Maila Barthel feels very connected to the artists who, each in his own time, pushed boundaries with their songs and caused a sensation. She interprets her texts and songs in her own way and particularly appreciates the straightness of expression, the direct address and the way the poets deal with the abysses of life, the fears of old age and death, as well as the ups and downs of love. The latest musical program of the duo “Die Barthel & Der Augustin” pays homage to Udo Jürgens “O you Udo - and the sun rises again and again”.
