José Severo Tavares

José Severo Tavares ( October 8, 1820 - November 9, 1907 ) was a Portuguese naval officer and rear admiral of the Marinha Portuguesa .

Life

José Severo Tavares joined the Navy as a cadet on June 16, 1832 and, after completing his training, was transferred to the Navy Guard (Guarda marinha) on May 13, 1837 , to which he was accepted with effect from November 27, 1837. On March 1, 1841, he received the patent as a lieutenant at sea , which came into force on December 1, 1842. On November 6, 1851 he was promoted to first lieutenant and on October 12, 1861 to lieutenant captain. In these assignments he was in command of the brig Mondego , the steamship Terceira , the corvette Bartolomeu Dias put into service on January 2, 1858 , the corvette Infante Regente and the corvette Constitucional .

After his promotion to frigate captain on March 31, 1869, he was promoted to sea captain on September 6, 1873 . Tavares, who was a graduate of the mathematics course at the Royal Naval Academy (Academia Real de Marinha) , was also in command of the corvette Fénix and the frigate Diana . On February 2, 1874 he was promoted to Rear Admiral (Contra − almirante) . For his many years of service he received various awards and honors and was, among other things, commander of the Order of Knights of Avis (Ordem Militar de São Bento de Aviz) , Knight and Commander of the Order of Christ (Ordem de Cavalaria de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo) and Knight of the Order of Our Loved ones Woman (Ordem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Vila Viçosa) . He was also commander of the Order of the Leopold in Belgium .
