José James (born January 20, 1978 in Minneapolis ) is an American jazz singer .

Live and act

James has ancestors from Panama and Ireland and grew up in Brooklyn . Grown up with hip-hop and soul, he felt drawn to jazz in his own words about Nat King Cole and especially John Coltrane , whose Equinox he interpreted. He moved between New York and England, where he caught the attention of producer and disc jockey Gilles Peterson at the 2006 Jazz Competition in London. His debut album The Dreamer with Junior Mance on piano was released in 2008 on his label Brownswood . James sings mostly his own compositions on it and uses different styles from classic scat singing to hip-hop ( Park Bench People from Freestyle Fellowship ). The title should be reminiscent of Martin Luther King . He plays with different rhythm groups and with Gideon van Gelder on the piano. In 2010 his second album Blackmagic was also released by Brownswood. For his Billie Holiday homage Yesterday I Had The Blues he was awarded an ECHO Jazz in 2016. In 2018 he published a homage to Bill Withers for his 80th birthday under the title Lean on Me .
