Josef Augustin (musician)
Josef Augustin (* 1929 in Batsch-Sentiwan; † 1980 in Dachau ) was a German folk musician.
Life
Josef Augustin was a full-time photographer, which was revealed in many record covers. Augustin's wind orchestra was founded in 1965 by his father Nikolaus Augustin and himself based on a long family tradition. There were numerous appearances in the 1970s, including overseas from 1970–1972. The name was "Donauschwäbische Blasmusik" until 1974 and from 1975 it was renamed " Josef Augustin and his wind orchestra ". Augustine directed the orchestra until his early death. The orchestra was then to be continued by the concertmaster Freek Mestrini , but this was not carried out and led to the end of the more than 100-year-old tradition. Josef Augustin died of cancer in 1980 after a brief, serious illness.
Productions
Between 1966 and 1980 more than 50 LPs were produced, including two with the small two orchestra "Silberwaldmusikanten". 1972-78, in addition to the productions with popular titles, an LP with potpourri of current hits was produced every year. Son and father Augustin made a special contribution to arranging current hits for a wind orchestra at short notice and playing them competently. The most successful titles are “Roses of Love”, “Two White Roses”, “You and I”, and the polka “Forests and Lakes”. Approx. 55% of the titles are polkas and 40% waltzes, as well as 5% marches and some landlords. The last two productions from 1980 are considered a musical legacy:
- an album with a reduced orchestral line-up and some modernly arranged tracks with saxophone interludes by Manfred Mende, with the label "New things give us every day",
- as well as an album with the Silberwaldmusikanten ("O Heideröslein").
Awards
- Josef Augustin has received several awards, including the Hermann Löns Medal .
- In 1973 he received his first gold record .
music
The standard line-up of the orchestra was
- an Eb clarinet (until 1970),
- 2 Bb clarinets,
- 4 flugelhorns (4th also trumpet),
- 4 tenor horns (baritones),
- 3 trumpets,
- 1 Bb tuba (until 1972 Helikon),
- Drums with kl. Drum, large drum and cymbal.
In 1980 Augustin produced tracks with an additional 2 alto saxophones and an electric bass. The line-up of the Silberwaldmúsikanten was accordion, trumpet, tenor horn, B-flat clarinet, guitar and electric bass. About half of the titles were sung by the duo soprano / tenor: From 1973 these were Erni Hornung and Josef Augustin as the "Silberwald-Duo", previously also some titles with the singing of other artists such as Hansl Krönauer and Helga Reichel. 1979/80 appearances with a second singer and a singer with a baritone vocal range. In the last vocal recordings with the Silberwald-Duo (from 1980) a change in the pitch of Josef Augustin's voice due to illness can be seen. Most of the compositions are by Nikolaus Augustin, who partly used folk tunes from Pannonia . In addition, some compositions by Franto Linharek , Laurin Munter and Freek Mestrini were recorded.
The orchestra initially consisted partly of amateur musicians, and from 1973 almost exclusively of professional musicians. In addition to Josef, three other members of the Augustin family played in the orchestra: his father Nikolaus on baritone (until 1978), his brother Andreas on trombone, and his great cousin Michael Horn on helicon and tuba (until 1973). Due to a mutual agreement with Ernst Mosch, well-known musicians from the original Egerland musicians also played with Josef Augustin, such as the concertmaster and solo trumpeter Freek Mestrini, Franto Linharek, Manfred Mende, Rudolf Lutze, Willi Müller, Antonin Schumacher, Reinhold Bönig, Herman Engelbertink, Ewald Komar, Albert Sontheim, Walter Huber, Josef Güntner, Josef Pemmerl and Hans Bodenmüller.
The sound of the orchestra reached a high degree of softness and silkiness from 1974. The productions from 1973–1979 are considered the musical climax and zenith of Josef Augustin's success.
