This was followed by engagements in Laibach, Frankfurt am Main and Cologne, from 1872 to 1874 in Salzburg and from 1874 to 1875 in Graz, the high point of his career. He then worked at the Berlin Court Opera and the Frankfurt Opera and in 1885 at the Deutsches Theater in Prague. In 1887 and 1888 he took on engagement in Bremen, from 1888 to 1890 sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was a member of the Frankfurt Freemason Lodge Socrates for steadfastness .

After his father became increasingly mentally deranged, he largely ended his career to take care of him. In Preßburg he was employed again as a singer and director from 1895 to 1896. He died in 1903, before his father died in 1904.
