Johann Nepomuk Beck
Johann Nepomuk Beck ( May 5, 1827 in Pest , Austrian Empire - April 9, 1904 in Preßburg , Austria-Hungary ) was an opera singer ( baritone ).
Life
Beck first studied law, but then his voice was discovered by the court opera singers Karl Formes and Josef Erl in Vienna in 1846.
After brief training in drama and singing, he gave a rehearsal performance in 1846 at the German Opera House in Budapest as "Riccardo" in Bellini's I Puritani .
He made his actual debut shortly afterwards at the Vienna Court Opera as the “speaker” in Mozart's Magic Flute .
He then went to Germany and gave guest performances and engagements in Hamburg, Bremen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Mainz, Würzburg and Wiesbaden. From 1851 to 1853 he worked at the Frankfurt Opera House.
In 1853 he went to the Imperial Court Opera in Vienna. He stayed there until his farewell performance on May 30, 1885. In 1881 he was made an honorary member of the Court Opera .
Around 1895 he (like his colleague Josef Staudigl ) fell into mental derangement and had to be admitted to the “mental hospital for mentally and mentally ill people” in Inzersdorf . His condition improved so much that he could be released and then live in Pressburg. Josef Beck , his son, also an opera singer, ended his career to look after his seriously ill father, but he died a year before his death in February 1903.
