Josef Breuer (chess player)
Josef Johann Breuer (born January 7, 1903 in Cologne , † August 2, 1981 in Wildbergerhütte ) was an important German composer in chess . He also found international recognition.
Chess composition
Breuer learned to play chess at the age of 13. He became a member (and later chairman) of the Cologne chess club in 1861 and initially began with party chess. From 1923 he shifted the focus to chess composition. He devoted himself to the so-called New German (better: logical) school and miniatures. More than 50 of his assignments have been included in the FIDE albums . He was awarded the title International Judge for chess problem , and International Master of chess compositions of FIDE excellent.

Tournament chess
Also in tournament chess, Breuer achieved an acceptable level of play and had regional successes. In 1923 he was a West German university champion, in 1933 he won the Cologne city championship.

Private
Breuer was a teacher by profession. During World War II he lost his home in Cologne, so he moved to Wildbergerhütte . Here he taught from 1946 to 1968.
