Josef Christ (born February 19, 1917 in Offhausen , Siegerland , † July 12, 1995 ) was a German sculptor .

Life

After completing his school education, Christ first worked as a lumberjack. At the age of 21 he suffered a serious accident with internal injuries as well as head and chest bruises in the forest in the Klotzbach near Kirchen. This was followed by a long hospital stay in Kirchen (Sieg) . Based on these experiences, Christ's artistic work was shaped, among other things, by religious themes. Christ, who became an early invalid in 1952 at the age of 35, also dealt with mining in his work. His sculptures, statues and sculptures include, for example, the group of miners in Brachbach and the mine cart , the statue of Mary there, the Madonna and St. Joseph with the baby Jesus. The Mariengrotto in Gebhardshain , made of Spateisenstein , is just as much his work as the two miners on the Herdorf market square . He carved the Bütt for the Bütt in Cologne Gürzenich. His last work, a Way of the Cross in the church on the Beulskopf near Altenkirchen, was initially unfinished. However, his son Klaus Christ carried out his father's commission to complete it.

Christ was buried in Brachbach. In the mortuary hall a cross made by him commemorates him.
