Josef Coenen (* thirtieth March 1885 in Cologne , † after 1941) was a German actor and director in the silent film .

Life

Coenen had received his artistic training from 1904 to 1906 from the actor Fritz Odemar senior (1858–1926) and during this time (1905/06) began to work both as an actor and as a director at the Cologne city theater. Further stages were Essen (1907) and Koblenz (1908) before he went to Berlin in 1909 .

Coenen began working there in 1912 as a production manager and director at the Decla film production company until 1916. Josef Coenen was drafted in 1917, and the following year he went on a theater tour with the Vaterländische Schauspiele. From 1918 to 1920 he was hired again as a director by the Decla and directed several films with Carola Toelle in the leading role. Between 1922 and 1929 Josef Coenen had his own production company in Munich . In 1929 an engagement took him to Paris (Perret Pictures).

The transition to the sound film failed Coenen; from 1932 to 1936 he was sick and since January 1938 unemployed. His last sign of life comes from 1941.
