Josef Draxler (born October 8, 1813 in Eibiswald ( Styria ); † September 5, 1891 in Prein an der Rax near Neunkirchen (Lower Austria) ) was an Austrian opera singer ( bass ).

Life

After discovering his voice at an early stage and enjoying the necessary vocational training, Draxler came to the Kärntnerthortheater as a choir singer in 1837 , where his beautiful bass soon caught the eye and he was entrusted with solo parts. He remained loyal to this institute as long as he even worked as a stage singer. Initially he worked alongside Josef Staudigl , but by taking on large roles during Staudigl's illness, he gained recognition and popularity with the public and the press.

In 1869 he also moved to the new Hof Opera Theater , where he retired as Kaspar in Carl Maria von Weber's opera Der Freischütz in 1876 after almost 40 years at the same theater.

Draxler retired to his country estate in the Prein, where he could pursue his favorite activities (hunting and agriculture) undisturbed.

His younger brother Alois Draxler was also an opera singer.
