Josef Gruber

Josef Gruber (born March 12, 1867 in Lambach ; † September 5, 1945 in Linz ) was a social democratic politician and mayor of Linz from 1930 to 1934.

Life

Josef Gruber was born as the son of an innkeeper in Lambach near Wels . He grew up in poor conditions. In 1886 he passed the Matura at the teacher training college. He worked as a teacher near Bad Goisern and in Altmünster , and later at community schools (predecessors of the current secondary schools) in Linz. In 1926 he became director of the boys' school on Figulystrasse; In 1933 Josef Gruber retired.

From 1907 to 1911 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the Reichsrat , from 1918 to 1920 a member of the National Council and from 1920 to 1925 of the Federal Council . As Deputy Governor, he was in charge of nutrition from 1919 to 1930.

Together with Josef Dametz , Gruber was one of the first nine social democratic municipal councilors in Linz in 1905, which he remained until 1934. Gruber was mayor of Linz from May 28, 1930 to February 12, 1934.

Many pioneering projects in Linz that were only implemented after his term in office went back to Gruber. These included the construction of the main train station , the construction of the Linz tobacco factory and the Linz harbor .

Gruber was the last democratically elected mayor of Linz before the Austrofascists came to power .

He died in Linz on September 5, 1945. The Gruberstraße in Linz, which leads from the Untere Donaulände to the Krankenhausstraße, was named after him in the year he died.
